Women in Tech

Who we are

Women in Technology, a committee that seeks to empower the female members of the Society. It focuses on providing a platform where they can share ideas, be inventive, creative and innovative. This enables them to gain relevant knowledge and skills. With this, they are able to excel in their different technological fields.

What we intend to do

  • To start other programs that will have a positive impact on the lives of those we mentor.
  • To continue working collaboratively with other committees for better advancement.
  • To be able to reach out to other ladies across the country and build an amazing objectified society.

What we do

Women in Technology runs a few programs that include:

SES Kids
A program that serves to demystify technology to children, to employ their create minds constructively and offer a fun and interactive opportunity to mentor them. WIT representatives organize this program locally.
WIT Projects
WIT members come up with various projects relevant projects to the courses they do and actively participate.

One of the core objectives of JKUAT SES is to enable the enhancement of its member’s soft skills- particularly Public Speaking and Leadership. It is with this in mind that this committee was incorporated into the Society as an extension of the Toastmasters International Organization. We aim to meet this objective by having regular Toastmaster sessions.

SES Projects

SES projects is the beating heart of the society of engineering students. It is the only place where we get to grow and nurture our skills as engineers to become better engineers and forge a better future. It is where great minds meet to turn ideas into reality, dreams into tangible objects, and vision into a whole new thing. We regularly organize competitions where our members have a platform to showcase their creativity and trainings where we show them how they can acquire new skills. We do believe that as a country, we can only move forward by the works and creativity of our engineers, and were here to nurture and grow that creativity and passion for one’s work.

About SES

JKUAT SES is the premier club for student engineers. Encompassing all engineering disciplines offered in JKUAT, we aim to promote the development of the student engineer in all aspects.

Our Philosophy
To promote, by all legitimate means, the general and higher education of the engineering students of Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology
Our Mission
We seek to improve the skills and visibility of JKUAT engineers by engaging them in: Practical engineering, mentorship and engineering events.
Our Process
We engage engineers in practical sessions, bringing them together with experts in various fields. Engineers are also engaged in events that promote their skills and capabilities, events that can help them to showcase their products

This committee is responsible for handling all SES publications including those on the website, the periodical SES magazine, and the regular Pen-Updates that cover topics on engineering and technology.

Corporate affairs

The Society of Engineering Students (SES) is a registered society in Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT). The society aims to produce skilled and specialized engineers, with emphasis on critical thinking & problem solving skills, ready for the job market upon completion of their respective five year course. This is driven by the knowledge that an engineer is always required to solve problems wherever they are. In line with this, Corporate Affairs Committee aims to partner with companies that would like to work with SES to provide internships and job opportunities, project funding among other benefits. We also organize training sessions on various sofwares and hardware including PLC (Programmable Logic Computers), Autodesk Civil 3D, Autodesk Revit, Inventor and Solidworks.

The SES Outreach is part of the Society of Engineering Students(SES) sub-committees and its members are endorsed with the responsibility of reaching out and educating high school students about the engineering courses offered in Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology.
This should be done at least once every academic year.
There have been three very successful outreach programs organized in the previous years. These are:

  1. June, 2012 at Nakuru county - Moi Forces Planet.
  2. September,2012 at Mombasa county's- Mama Ngina Girls Secondary, Aga Khan High School, Alvina Visram High, among others.
  3. February 2012 - Kilifi and Kwale counties to Shimo la Tewa High School and Kwale boys.
  4. September 2012- Western Kenya: Chemelil Academy, Maranda Boys' High School.

  • To sensitize students in selected high schools on all the engineering courses being offered at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology.
  • To show students how to calculate their cluster points as regards KUCCPS.
  • To effectively market JKUAT as an excellent higher learning institution.
  • To mentor students including teaching them simple engineering concepts such as computer programming.

Why take part in outreach programmes?

  • These programs help to guide and inform the younger generation on the pros and cons of pursuing engineering.
  • It is a great way to give back to society.
  • It provides an opportunity for the committee members to be mentors.
  • The mentorship programme is a learning experience for the committee members as well apart from them teaching the high school students

Mentorship remains a key tool in SES as it has proven to be a successful means of preparing engineering students with relevant skills and knowledge for ease of entry into the job industry. Mentorship and pragmatic learning through internships are therefore focus areas for SES. Each semester, the committee is expected to organize one seminar, and the event has always been hosted within the campus.
